The Lewiston Maineiacs finally got their power play working Friday night.

It just didn’t work at the right time.

Even with a late chance with an extra skater, the Maineiacs managed just two shots on net in the third period and watched as the PEI Rocket skated off the Charlottetown Civic Centre ice with a 4-2 win.

“Things didn’t work when we needed them to work,” Maineiacs’ head coach Ed Harding said. “The guys were moving the puck well all game, and then we went back to being individualistic at the end.”

The Maineiacs twice battled back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 tie through 40 minutes, but stumbled on offense in the third.

The Rocket’s Mathieu Tousignant scored his 19th of the season off Lewiston defenseman Patrick Cusack’s skate just 2:09 into the third to put his team ahead for good.

“Our guys were like 400 feet from theirs and we let them walk right in on (goalie) Peter (Delmas),” Harding said. “We let them come right in.”

Benjamin Casavant added an empty-netter in the final minute to cap the scoring.

Jordan Southorn put the Rocket ahead 1-0 at 4:29 of the opening frame on the power play. Eric Gelinas scored his second of the season on a Maineiacs power play to even the score, only to watch as Casavant netted his first of the night to put PEI on top again, 2-1.

Stefan Chaput, who earned the game’s No. 2 star in the loss, evened things up again in the second with his 27th of the season, an unassisted goal at the 14:14 mark.

Already missing Marc Bourgeois (lower leg injury) and Jakub Bundil (sickness), Lewiston lost Todd Chinova during Friday’s game to an apparent injury.

“We’re pretty banged up,” Harding admitted.

Lewiston has just a day off before facing Shawinigan at home on Sunday afternoon. One piece of relief: The Cataractes will be playing their fourth game in five nights.

In other action across the league, Cape Breton lost 6-0 to St. John’s, while Acadie-Bathurst lost, 5-4, to Rouyn-Noranda.
