NEW GLOUCESTER – Two men were arrested on assault and other charges Friday after an Internet chat led to a confrontation on Lewiston Road.
Police said a pair of men went to the 745 Lewiston Road home of a teenager after she had told them that her boyfriend, with whom she shares a home, was treating her badly.
Investigators said the boyfriend was beaten with a baseball bat he had produced in an effort to defend himself. He was later taken to a Lewiston hospital
The teenage girl was also injured during the fracas, police said.
Justin Kennie, 18, of Cumberland, and Collin Gebhardt, 19, of Gray, were arrested when police went to a home in Gray as they began investigating the home invasion. Gebhardt was charged with aggravated criminal trespass, assault and violating conditions of release stemming from a previous, unrelated arrest involving a gun.
Kennie was charged with aggravated criminal trespass, aggravated assault and refusing to submit to arrest. He was also arrested on a warrant charging failure to appear in court on previous charges of burglary and criminal trespass.
Police said 17-year-old Amanda Taplin had been chatting with Kennie over the Internet Friday morning when she mentioned that her boyfriend was mistreating her. Kennie sent a message to Taplin telling her he would come pick her up, police said.
Shortly after, Kennie and Gebhardt drove to the home Taplin shares with 19-year-old Gard Griffin. Taplin met the men outside but Kennie decided to go into the home to talk with Griffin, police said.
As Kennie knocked on the door, he saw Griffin run into his bedroom, police said. Kennie and Gebhardt then burst into the home and found Griffin. He grabbed a bat to defend himself, but Kennie grabbed it from him, police said.
Griffin was struck in the head several times while trying to defend himself and received an arm injury. Taplin was also struck by one of the two suspects during the incident but did not require medical attention, police said.
Griffin was taken to Central Maine Medical center in Lewiston. His condition was not available Friday night.
Lewiston Road is a section of Route 202 stretching through New Gloucester.
Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies who went to the scene later tracked the suspects to a home at 29 Hunts Hill Road in Gray. Both Gebhardt and Kennie were arrested and taken to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, where they remained Friday afternoon.
