AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine’s unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percentage point in January to 5 percent.

The state Labor Department says Maine’s rate was still a little better that the national rate for January, 5.1 percent.

Commissioner Laura Fortman said non-farm jobs fell by 600, due mainly to a larger-than-normal seasonal reduction in the number of college work-study students and nonprofessional school staff.
