HARRISON – An investigation was continuing Thursday into the death of a 4-month-old boy who apparently drowned while taking a bath with his mother.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy as they probe the death of the child, whose body was found by authorities Wednesday night in an apartment at 12 Mill St.

State police identified the baby as Zachary Henderson.

State police Lt. Brian McDonough said Zachary and his mother, 43-year-old Pamela Henderson, were the only ones in the home at the time. Police say Pamela Henderson apparently fell asleep while in the bath.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department was called to the home at about 6 p.m. Wednesday when it was reported the child was dead and the mother was hysterical.

Police said the distraught woman attempted suicide.

Sheriff Mark Dion declined to release any additional information about the case on Thursday.

Neighbors said Henderson has been living in a second-floor apartment with Zachary and a 17-year-old daughter, who was not home at the time.

State police were asked to join the investigation and sent a team of crime scene investigators to the home.

State police generally are involved in all deaths considered to be suspicious. Under Maine law, the death of a child under the age of 3 is classified as suspicious.

Detectives were in Harrison most of the day Thursday, further examining the Mill Street home and conducting interviews.

Pamela Henderson was taken to a Bridgton hospital Thursday for care, but police did not give the reason she was admitted.
