CHESTERVILLE – Residents have 54 articles to consider during the annual town meeting Monday night at the town office.

Prior to that, voters will need to choose one of three candidates to fill a three-year selectmen’s term currently held by John Worth.

Worth is being challenged by residents Nathan Bean and Orin Knowles, Deputy Clerk Heather Wheeler said.

Elections are scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m., March 10 at the town office and the town meeting reconvenes at 7 p.m., there.

Residents will be asked to raise and appropriate $9,000 for a tax assessor, $20,000 for code enforcement, $22,000 for the Fire Department and $79,000 for tipping fees and transportation of waste to Norridgewock along with other requests.

Some articles pertain to the Land Use Ordinance and a change in the way building permit fees are charged.

Building permit fees now are based on construction costs, including labor and materials, but over the past few years, selectmen noticed some large discrepancies on similar-sized properties, Code Enforcement Officer Brenda Medcoff said in February.

For example, construction costs for a 32- by 32-foot house can range from $60,000 to $145,000, depending on the builder and materials, Medcoff said.

Selectmen think it would be fairer to go by square footage or how the house sits on the ground, she said.

“It’s not to raise permit fees but to make it more fair,” she said. The board is proposing a fee of five cents per square foot, and for an accessory structure like a garage or storage unit, a $5 base fee and two cents per square foot.
