OXFORD – Following the indefinite delay of a Lowe’s home and garden center development, a selectman will compose a letter of concern to the state.

The board unanimously approved Roger Jackson’s proposal Thursday to compose a letter to send to the Department of Environmental Protection and Gov. John Baldacci. Jackson said he had spoken with Sen. David Hastings III (R-Oxford) and Rep. Terry Hayes (D-Buckfield) about the issue.

Developer Bob Bahre blamed the DEP for the postponement, and Jackson concurred.

“I’ve had my dealings with regulatory commissions here in the state, and I’m not at all impressed,” said Jackson.

DEP officials have denied delaying the project.

Town Manager Michael Chammings said he was disappointed with the decision by Lowe’s, after the efforts of Norway and Oxford to support the project. He referenced the approval by Oxford residents of a tax increment financing district for Lowe’s, which aimed to use captured revenue to improve municipal water service to the northern part of the town.

However, Chammings also said he wished to maintain a good working relationship with the DEP.
