FRYEBURG – A building recently purchased by the Fryeburg Fair Association collapsed under the weight of snow Saturday.

Roy Andrews, president of the association, said the building was purchased Jan. 1 along with a parcel of land. He estimated the building to be 4,000 to 5,000 square feet in size and said it was going to be used for storage.

“It was unfortunate, but things like that do happen,” he said.

The structure at Swans Falls Road and Main Street was once the industrial arts building for Fryeburg Academy. Andrews said there has been an ongoing snow removal effort at the fairgrounds, but it had not reached the building. No one was injured in the collapse.

On Wednesday, a former Bailey’s Manufacturing building on Porter Road also collapsed due to snow buildup. Elizabeth Swain, a consultant for Poland Spring, said the building had been bought by the company to protect the aquifer.

Mark Dubois, a natural resources manager with Nestle Waters North America, which owns Poland Spring, estimated the building to be 30 feet wide by 80 to 100 feet long. He said the building was a “total loss,” but was vacant at the time of the collapse.

Swain said the building was not being used by Poland Spring and that there had been no plans to develop it.
