AUBURN – Three vehicles, including an antique convertible worth $120,000, were recovered here Tuesday a week after they were reported stolen.

A man who had been plowing around the Fireside Inn on Washington Street was credited with leading police to the stolen Packard and a truck and trailer used to haul it. He may be eligible for a $10,000 reward.

On Tuesday morning, investigators from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office issued a news release as the search for the stolen vehicles went on.

They said the vehicles were driven away from 54 Bayou Road in Naples overnight between March 4 and 5. A 1994 GMC 3500 four-door pickup and 1994 Pace American trailer were taken from the yard, but the real gem was inside the trailer: A 1937 Packard 120 convertible appraised at $120,000.

Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicles belong to John Betz, who is in Florida but has a summer home in Maine.

At about 6 p.m. Tuesday, a man called Auburn police after hearing about the thefts in the media. He recalled seeing the maroon pickup truck and trailer parked at the Fireside. He also told police he got a glimpse of the Packard when the trailer was opened briefly a few days ago.

Auburn police secured the vehicles until detectives arrived from Cumberland County. They examined the scene, collected evidence and verified that the vehicles found were those reported stolen last week.

“We’ll be making arrangements to have it all removed,” said Cumberland County Sheriff’s Detective Keith Cook, who said the vehicles would be impounded for further examination.

No arrests had been made by late Tuesday night.

The name of the man who tipped off police was not immediately released. But at the Fireside, others said the truck and trailer had been parked in the lot for most of a week. They said a man had been in the area telling strangers that he was trying to sell the Packard.

Police were attempting to locate that man and other potential witnesses.

The black enclosed trailer that housed the Packard was attached to the maroon GMC pickup truck when it was located Tuesday night. When detectives opened the trailer, the cream yellow Packard with tan top, gray interior and rumble seat was inside, secured with straps anchoring it to the floor.

Both truck and trailer are registered in Florida and each bore plates from that state.

Betz has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the thief or thieves and recovery of the vehicles.

Foss said the truck was unlocked when it was stolen. He suspects the thief had his eye on the Packard more than the other vehicles.

“The truck was already connected to the trailer, and the unit combined is about a 60-foot long unit, which to me indicates that the person isn’t just looking to steal a car for a ride home,” Foss said. “Obviously this is based upon the value of the vehicle and the type of vehicle it is.”

Betz estimated the value of the truck at at least $15,000 and the trailer at $5,000. He told television news reporters from his Florida home he has no idea who might have taken then.
