RUMFORD – Police refused to reveal specifics on Wednesday of a potential felony complaint they are investigating that involves a SAD 43 staff member at Mountain Valley High School.

Detective Sgt. Daniel Garbarini, who mainly investigates sex crimes, said there have been no arrests and no charges brought.

“It’s an open investigation … and we are pursuing a criminal matter,” Garbarini said. “The (Maine) Computer Crimes Task Force is not involved at this stage. I still have a number of interviews to be done.”

Garbarini declined to identify a suspect, the date the complaint was lodged, or the type of offense involved.

According to the police department incidents log of March 6, an unlawful sexual contact complaint was made to police regarding the high school. But Garbarini steadfastly refused to confirm that the criminal complaint he’s investigation is a sex crime.

Contacted Wednesday afternoon, MVHS Principal Matt Gilbert deferred comment to SAD 43 Superintendent James Hodgkin. Calls to Hodgkin were not immediately returned.

Garbarini debunked rumors floating around Rumford that last week police escorted a MVHS staff member out of the high school at 799 Hancock St.

“We have worked with the school in an effort to be considerate to their staff and their staff has been very accommodating,” Garbarini added.
