FARMINGTON – Gold LEAF Institute, the senior college at the University of Maine at Farmington, is offering classes this spring.
North Dining Hall at UMF was full Wednesday as people age 50 and over gathered to hear about the courses and sign up for classes like Tai Chi, a guided warbler walk or a tour of Foster Vocational Center to learn about a solar-powered electric car under construction there.
It’s not too late to register for classes, said Helen Bourque of the Gold LEAF office on Wednesday. Some classes have a maximum number of participants and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. But registration for classes not already full can be accepted up to two weeks before the class starts.
Some members of the senior college teach classes, she said, while others are led by people not associated with the university. A biology presentation is led by a couple of UMF students as part of a biology course they are taking, she said.
Susan Waller of Farmington, who, like many others, was making her way around to presenters on Wednesday, said she liked the courses because the topics vary.
“They are easy to fit into my life and it’s nice to meet other interesting people,” she said.
A Web site for the senior college was introduced by office coordinator Myrna Vallette, who said she learned about starting the site through a program offered by Gold LEAF.
A course schedule and information about the senior college is now available at their Web site: goldleaf.wikispaces.com. For more information about the courses available, contact the institute at 778-7063.
