AVON – Pay raises for selectmen and the treasurer will be decided by townspeople Saturday when they meet to vote on a 2008 town government budget on Saturday.

Voters will also determine if they want to adopt a building notification ordinance at the town meeting that begins at 9 a.m. on March 15 at the Community Hall.

Select board Chairwoman Joyce Potter, who is not seeking re-election, said the proposed increases in salary are:

• First selectman – from $6,000 to $7,000;

• Second selectman – from $1,000 to $1,500;

• Third selectman – from $1,000 to $1,500;

• Treasurer – from $3,000 to $4,000.

Nominations will be taken from the floor for the three-year first selectman’s term held by Potter, a one-year treasurer’s position now held by Cindy Nixon, who is also not seeking re-election, and the one-year road commissioner position held by Jerry Haines. Potter said she expects Haines to run again.

Bob Ellis is interested in the first selectmen’s position, she said, and Maureen Haley has expressed interest in running for town treasurer.

The proposed building notification ordinance, approved by the Planning Board, asks people to notify town officials when there is any kind of building construction going on, including expansion and alteration.

The notification is to let town officials know about changes in property so the tax assessors can keep the tax base up to date, Potter said.

“It’s a way of keeping track of property values,” she said.

Selectmen have worked to keep the budget reasonable but obviously there are some increases in some items, including heat and fuel, Potter said.
