AVON – Residents gathered Saturday morning at the Municipal Building for the annual town meeting, and to pay tribute to some of the people who have served the town over the years.
Steve Weiner was recognized for his 15 years of service to Avon, as were outgoing Treasurer Cynthia Dixon and outgoing Selectperson Joyce Potter, both of whom decided not to seek re-election. Bob Ellis was elected to take Potter’s first selectman spot, and Maureen Haley was tapped to become the new town treasurer.
Of the 62 articles contained in the town warrant, few prompted much discussion from residents and passed as written. The one that perhaps garnered the most attention was an article enacting “The Building Notification Ordinance of the Town of Avon.”
The ordinance requires that landowners notify the town when making permanent improvements to their property that would change the rate of taxation. Many who attended were initially concerned that the ordinance was implementing a permit system that could limit land use or put undue hardship on property owners.
After reassurances by Planning Board member Janne Haines and others that the ordinance does not involve an approval process, and that it is only intended to make it easier for the town assessor to ensure fair taxation, residents passed the ordinance by a wide margin.
After the meeting, Potter said she was pleased with how things had gone this year.
“We have good discussions in Avon,” she said. “They don’t get heated, just good discussions.”
