HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior attackman Kris Tedeschi scored three goals to lead Trinity to a 7-5 victory over Bates in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bobcats (0-5) got on the board first in the second quarter with a goal from junior attackman Tyler Moore. The Bantams (3-0) tied the game just over a minute later with Tedeschi’s first goal, before taking a 4-2 halftime lead.

Navy 5, Maine 4

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The designated hitter, Mitch Harris, homered and tripled to lift Navy to a 5-4 triumph over the University of Maine in baseball action at Bishop Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Billy Cather led the the Black Bears (5-10) with three hits and an RBI, while Joe Mercurio was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Curt Smith doubled, stole third and scored on Cather’s single to shortstop.

Maine made it 2-0 in the top of the third inning when Tony Patane followed a Joe Mercurio lead off single with a double to left center, plating Mercurio.

The Midshipmen (9-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead, and extended its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Harris homered.

Navy took the lead back for good in the bottom of the seventh when Harris tripled in Hamilton. Maine threatened in the top of the eighth inning, but was unable to push across the tying run.

Joe Miller pitched the complete game for the Black Bears. He went eight innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits while striking out seven. He falls to 2-1 on the season with the loss.

Bates splits with Elms

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bates College defeated Elms College 11-7 in the opening game before the Blazers earned the split with a 7-5 victory in Game 2 in baseball action on Saturday.

Senior Casey McCormack hit a grand slam for the Bobcats (1-1) in the opener, highlighting a busy offense. Senior Brian Buckley went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI’s, including a solo homer in the first inning.

Senior Erik Hook and sophomore Josh Linscott each went 3-for-4 at the plate, and senior Brian Mahoney submitted a 3-for-5 effort.

The offense wasn’t quite as potent for Bates in the nightcap, but Hood batted 2-for-4, and senior captain Rob Patton went 2-for-3.

Alexander finishes 6th at NCAAs

ADA, Ohio – Junior Izzy Alexander finished sixth in the women’s 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, earning the second All-America honors of her career.

Alexander ran a time of 2:16.46 in Saturday’s final, while Jessica Scott of Wisconsin-Platteville won the race in 2:11.84. In Friday’s preliminary heats, Alexander broke her own Bates record by timing in at 2:13.87, shaving 0.82 seconds off the mark she set 13 days earlier at the Open New Englands.

Also on Friday, the first day of the meet, Bates sophomore Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan of Topsham won the first All-America honors of her career. She finished eighth in the 20-pound throw.

Duncan posted her top throw of 53 feet, 11 inches on her first throw. Duncan becomes the 13th Bates woman to achieve All-America status in indoor track and field and the second to win the award in the weight throw.
