Kudos to Genia Graham, who was honored with the Cameron Duncan Award, and to EqualityMaine for recognizing Graham’s efforts in HIV/AIDS education and prevention (“Grandmother lauded for work in AIDS prevention,” Sun Journal, March 8).

As a non-gay, HIV-negative male, I have spent the last decade working toward the same goals of awareness, education and prevention, especially among young people. I know first hand how difficult the challenges are for Graham as she pursues her work in education and advocacy.

HIV/AIDS carries a social stigma ,unlike breast cancer or muscular dystrophy or a host of other afflictions. Those who are infected often remain underground rather than seek help because they would likely face discrimination.

Awareness, education and prevention efforts are often hampered by the general discomfort people feel when discussing HIV/AIDS and the means of transmission of the virus. Ms. Graham is doing important work and I wanted to add my congratulations to those she has already received.
