This is in response to the letter from Barbara Rankins printed March 11. She says Maine has to fix itself and seems to imply that raising taxes would be better than cutting any welfare services.

I believe that the people of Maine are taxed to the maximum already.

The people who may not be able to get their medications will have to find another way, such as a hospital emergency room, where they can get the medications. That would be cheaper than giving all the people on welfare medications they don’t need.

I understand that mistakes are made. Let’s say a woman gets pregnant and has a no-good man. The public should help with assistance for the child. But if a woman continues to have more babies like that, why should the taxpayers pay for more of their mistakes?

I believe there should be no new taxes.
