PERU – Former Selectman Dick Powell told the board Monday night that he is concerned about the road commissioner’s administrative duties being done at home.

Selectman Corey Jacques said paperwork had to be done so the town could see where the road money was going. He explained that last fall he wanted to apply for federal money, and when he went to the office to get the paperwork, there was none he could use.

Powell did not dispute the need for the accounting, but he asked if the town would choose someone who was capable of doing it.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer said selectmen have no control over the town’s choice, but, he added, “If the elected road commissioner can’t do the job, we will make sure the town knows.”

Pulsifer said selectmen have to review what the town received for the $500,000 spent last year on capital improvement.

Powell suggested establishing a road committee. He also said he would be at the meeting next week with facts and figures on spending on roads last year. He cautioned the board to be careful of politics.

In other matters, selectmen adopted a personnel policy and grievance procedure.

The town will advertise for cemetery maintenance bids.

Selectmen reviewed an outline of what should be included in the town report. It included road plans for 2007, problems with the road bond and selectmen resigning, decisions made in September and October 2007, outline of winter operations 2007-2008, fiscal year changes and school consolidation issues. They will return their reports next week.
