WATERFORD – Selectman Randy Lessard remembered former board member David Marston on Monday, praising him for his dedication to the town.
Marston, a resident of McIntire Road who was in his early 70s, was found dead in his home March 13 after someone from the Waterford Town Hall called State Police headquarters in Gray at 8:35 a.m. and asked that a well-being check be done since Marston had not been seen in several days.
“It’s been determined this is a non-suspicious death,” Maine State Police Lt. Walter Gryzyb said.
He said Trooper Andre Paradis responded to the call and that it is unlikely an autopsy will be conducted because Marston was elderly and probably under a doctor’s care.
Marston, a one-term selectman, chose not to seek re-election this year.
“I didn’t know him very well, but I liked what I saw,” said Selectman Randy Lessard, who was elected to replace Marston in the Feb. 29 annual town election. “It’s a real shame. Everyone liked him. I had an opportunity to deal with him when he went to a lot of committees meetings.”
Town Clerk Brenda Bigonski said Marston actively represented the board at various committee meetings. He was elected in 2005 for three years.
“We were very surprised. We thought he didn’t have any health issues,” Bigonski said.
Selectmen’s Chairman John Bell was unavailable for comment Monday.
Marston described the work of selectman as “full-time job” and said he was very busy now at his home. “I have quite a lot to do on the farm where I live,” he commented.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Weston-Chandler Funeral Homes in Norway. An obituary is pending, a receptionist at the funeral home said Monday. It is believed that Marston had a brother in the Portland area and a sister in Florida but no other family in the local area, officials said.
