PARIS – A 29-year-old Mexico man has been charged with aggravated assault and harassment following a confrontation at the Oxford County Jail.
David Robert Long of 59 Granite St. is accused of kicking 23-year-old Jesse Farrington of Wyman Hill Road in Andover in the eye on Thursday. Capt. Ernest Martin, the jail’s administrator, said corrections officer Charlene Hoyt responded to a fight around 4:30 p.m. Thursday and found Farrington lying on the floor.
After Hoyt and corrections officer Tammy Arsenault administered first aid at the jail, Farrington was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. He was later taken to an eye specialist in Farmington.
“The injuries are pretty significant from what we’ve learned,” Martin said. “It was described by the emergency room as a blowout fracture of the left orbital bone.”
Martin said Farrington was given stitches at the hospital and may require surgery, but is unlikely to lose vision.
Martin said Farrington may also be charged with assault in the confrontation, because Long suffered a minor laceration above his right eye after Farrington swung a door at him.
Both men lived in a cell block made up of trustees, who are allowed to do work to earn time off their sentences. Martin said inmates earn one day off their sentences for every 16 hours of work. Following the fight, both men lost their jobs and were relocated to different cells.
Long, who was serving a nine-month sentence for stealing drugs and violation of bail conditions, was scheduled to be released on April 25. Farrington, who was serving nine months on six concurrent sentences for assault, reckless conduct, failure to stop for an officer, theft, and violation of bail conditions, was scheduled for release on June 20.
Martin said Long was working in the jail’s laundry, and Farrington was working the kitchen. He said the laundry work is done at night, and the conflict may have arisen over Farrington making noise during the day while Long was trying to sleep.
According to the jail’s booking sheets, Long was arrested on the charges on Saturday by Deputy Shane Thomas of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. The initial bail for the new charges was set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 surety.
Martin said bail on the new charges will be set in court, and Long will remain in jail beyond his release date if he is unable to post it.
