NEW VINEYARD – Stanton L. Ellis, 84, of New Vineyard died Sunday, March 16, at his home on the Barker Road.
He was born June 14, 1923, in Strong, the son of Gerald L. and Alida B (Goodwin) Ellis. As a young man, he started as a farmer before entering the U.S. Army and serving his country in World War II.
When he came home, he worked at the paper mill in Jay. He also worked in the woods, then for many years before he retired he worked for the state of Maine Department of Transportation bridge crew as a foreman.
He was a member of the American Legion in North New Portland 173. He continued farming as a hobby even while he was working other careers, and enjoyed tinkering on equipment and reading.
He is survived by two daughters, Alicia Carroll and companion, Frank O’Donnell, of Temple, and Maria Webber and her husband, Scott, of New Vineyard; three sons, Gerald L. Ellis and his wife, Cheryl, of New Vineyard, Gale E. Ellis and companion, Sharon, of New Vineyard and Timothy S. Ellis and companion, Sandy, of Corinna; 20 grandchildren, Lucinda, Stanton, Daphanie, Kimberly, Cale, Kirt, Keith, Louie, Casey, Megan, Jamie, Wendy, Teddy, Brian, Angela, Wesley, Scott II, Seth, Shane and Samuel; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a brother, Clayton Ellis and his wife, Flora, of Buxton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Betty; his son, Theodore; and two sisters, Bernice and Geraldine.
