On Feb. 1, 62 Lewiston Middle School students went job shadowing in local businesses. There were students from all six of the school teams, but most of them were seventh graders.

The job shadowing has been going on for two years. It is sponsored by Junior Achievement.

Some of the kids went to CMMC, some to TD Banknorth, and the rest went to City Hall.

Maddy Blaisdell tells of her experience at TD Banknorth. “I shadowed someone who works in the customer service department. I learned about what she did. She answered customers’ phone calls and answered their questions. The experience opened more doors of career choices for me.”

Casey Griffin describes what she did at the CMMC library. “When we got there, she (the person she shadowed) showed us that they copy the books and send them to other hospitals that need them. She showed us how to classify all the books in the library. We saw interns come in and work on the computers and work with the books. Toward the end they showed us how to organize the big medical books.” Casey said that the overall experience was ” very interesting. Before that day I didn’t even know the hospital had a library.”

Erica Brouchu went to City Hall. ” I worked with Human Resources. I took a tour around City Hall. We saw a video called Smashed, on drunk driving. I saw the old jail. We looked at all the fire extinguishers to make sure they were checked out for the month. I learned about three different jobs, and the experience was very educational.”

So that was a preview of what some of the kids did when they went job shadowing.
