For the past couple of months, kindergarten through third grade students from Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls, have been wild about reading. Teachers have started a new approach to try to get children into reading. They say that this is just a way to teach kids how reading can be fun. Every twenty-five hours that the students read, they receive a different colored book mark. The bookmark is used to record their reading time every thirty minutes. They will also receive a wildcat pencil for the first twenty-five hours, then a jungle animal bookmark, a toy out of the treasure chest, and finally a new book, when they have read for 100 hours. I also think that the kids love to hear their names over the intercom whenever they reach their goal. Some teachers have noticed that with all of the extra reading, their students’ reading skills have also improved. “One of my girls who has read a lot in the program has scored higher on her reading tests,” says Mrs. Vaillencourt, a first and second grade teacher at Elm street School. The “Wild About Reading” program has been a great success at Elm Street School. Kids are really enjoying the program.
