MORRISVILLE, Vt. – Clara S. Howard, 98, died peacefully Sunday, March 16, at the home of her daughter in Morrisville, Vt.
She was born July 13, 1909, in Rumford, the daughter of Elisha and Lucy Jones Stetson. She married Raymond D. Howard in 1932 in Dixfield.
She was a graduate of Dixfield High School and attended Bates College. She was a member of the Advance Club, the Order of Eastern Star and the Dixfield Congregational Church, where she served as the treasurer for many years. She and her husband, Raymond, owned and operated Howard’s Drygoods Store in Dixfield for nearly 40 years.
She especially enjoyed her ever expanding family. Her hobbies included braiding rugs, furniture refinishing and knitting. She was an avid reader and baked great apple pies.
She is survived by her daughter, Lucy Callender and husband, Clark, of Morrisville, Vt.; grandchildren, Stephen Callender and wife, Yvette, of Durham, N.C., Karen Westervelt and husband, Todd, of Stowe, Vt., and David Callender and wife, Jessica, of Dover, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raymond in 1993; and a brother, Robert L. Stetson in 1991.
