AUBURN – River Ratts spent the early portion of the L/A Senior Hockey League season in the cellar and wound up only sixth out of eight teams in the final regular-season standings.

In an open tournament, however, it’s all about how you finish.

The Ratts swept through the other three teams in their playoff bracket and capped an unlikely charge to the championship Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Custom Metal Fabrication at Ingersoll Arena.

Custom also was a late bloomer, sweeping its first three playoff games after an overall finish of seventh.

Matt Cote chalked up a hat trick for the victorious Ratts, while Jason Landry landed the other two goals.

Randy Teixiera registered the lone goal for Custom Metal Fabrication.
