WILTON – A suspect in auto thefts in Wilton and Dixfield turned himself in to Arkansas police Wednesday, police Chief Dennis Brown said.
Brown is working with the District Attorney’s Office to arrange for Dennis Gray, 20, of Winthrop, to be returned to Maine.
Gray is also suspected of stealing a Grand Am in Arkansas. That car was found partially submerged, Brown said. There was some confusion over the vehicles as Brown reported Monday that a car stolen from R.S. Osgood & Sons last week was found in Arkansas.
The 1999 Monte Carlo taken from Osgood has not been found, Brown said Thursday, and neither has a firearm stolen in Dixfield and linked to the car thefts.
Brown said Gray is suspected of stealing a truck and firearm in Dixfield. Traveling toward Wilton, he wrecked the truck, and surveillance camera footage showed him entering an employee’s Monte Carlo at Osgood. Gray then went to Wilton where he attempted to steal two more vehicles, as recorded by KeyBank surveillance cameras, Brown said. He also attempted to break into another vehicle on Main Street, Brown said.
The Monte Carlo was entered into a national database that alerted Arkansas police. Gray is believed to have family ties in that state, Brown said.
A warrant for the theft and other charges was issued last week.
