BANGOR (AP) – The Maine Troop Greeters are approaching another milestone. They expect to meet their 3,000th flight on Friday.

Regardless of the hour, the organization has sent people to the Bangor International Airport to greet troops headed to and from war zones since 2003.

Commemorative coins have been created for Friday’s event and will be distributed to troops and crew. The troops will then be treated to cake and free cell phone calls.

There are 130 official greeters and they get plenty of practice: Planes carrying troops stop regularly in Bangor to meet customs obligations, refuel and change crews for continuing flights.
