FARMINGTON – Community members sat in silence at noon Friday as the chimes at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church began to play.
They sat in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, three days before his resurrection on Easter morning.
Pastors from area churches gathered for the Good Friday service held this year at Henderson Memorial. Each took a role of a biblical character in the service adapted from “The Last Words: A Tenebrae Drama,” by Ronald D. Vaughan.
Mary, Simon, the Centurion and others spoke of their fears and sins that were forgiven by the one who forgave and bore the burden of mankind.
With the altar cross and communion table draped in black, a single candle was extinguished after each pastor spoke, leaving the darkness as Jesus experienced while he hung on the cross.
Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry pastors involved in the ceremony included the Rev. Susan Crane from the host church; the Rev. Cathie Wallace from “Old South” First Congregational Church; the Rev. Roger Chabot, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church; the Rev. Marcia Charles from Shorey Chapel, UCC; the Rev. Scott Planting from Fairbanks Union Church; the Rev. Terry McKinley, Trinity United Methodist Church; and the Rev. Richard Waddell filled in for the Rev. Tim Walmer of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Steve Russell and Roy Scribner also participated in the service. Daniel Woodward served as organist.
