LEWISTON – Thelma Alpren Mattingly, 68, known by friends and family as Temmie, died from cancer at Central Maine Medical Center on Friday, March 21.
Temmie grew up in Cranston, R.I. She attended local schools there and graduated from Simmons College with a B.S. in chemistry in 1961. She worked in the medical profession all of her adult life, beginning her career in cancer research at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass. After moving to Maine, she worked as an emergency medical technician and most recently as a dental assistant.
A talented scientist who enjoyed her work helping others, she also loved animals and crafts, especially sewing and painting. However, her greatest passion was her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who was happiest spending time with children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed vacations in Florida, and loved shopping with her daughters.
She was the daughter of Herman and Celia Galkin and the sister of Eleanor Galkin Graham, who all predeceased her.
She will be sadly missed by her beloved children and grandchildren, daughter, Sheri Alpren Clark, her husband, Kevin, and their children, Andrew Chase Clark and Samantha Ashley Clark, of Lewiston; her son, Steven Glenn Alpren, his wife, Heidi, and their sons, Jacob Alexander and Dylan Lee Alpren, of Falmouth; and her daughter, Lori Alpren Kenney, her husband, Alan, and their children, Joshua Aaron and Caitlyn Leah Kenney of Monmouth.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful care she received over the years from Drs. Richard Kappelmann, Nicky Erickson and Jeff Miller. The family would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the M-1 staff at CMMC for their kindness and compassion.
