DARIEN, Conn. – Senior first baseman Erik Hood went 5-for-8, including a two-run home run, in doubleheader action as Bates notched a 19-2 rout in Game 1 and a 9-0 blanking in Game 2 over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in baseball action Saturday.
Senior second baseman Denis Hogan and senior catcher Alex Egelson each went 2-for-4 for the Bobcats in Game 1.
Senior Sean VanderVliet moved to 2-0 on the year, going five innings before giving way to first-year Ryan Heide, who pitched one inning in relief before the game was called by the mercy rule.
Sophomore lefthander Custer Cook carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Game 2, before allowing the Owls their first hit and being relieved by junior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti.
Senior short stop Brian Mahoney went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the game.

Bates 9, Amherst 4
LEWISTON – Sophomore defender Michael Nadler sparked the Bobcats with two goals in the second half as Bates handed Amherst College its first loss of the season with a 9-4 NESCAC conference win in men’s lacrosse action Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.
The Bobcats (2-5) held the Lord Jeffs (5-1) to only a single goal in each period, as senior goalie Will Paddock collected 10 saves. The Bobcats also outshot the Lord Jeffs in every period but the fourth, amassing a 39-24 advantage in shots taken.
Junior Tyler Moore also scored twice for Bates, while seniors Brent Morin and Justin Simon both came up with a goal and an assist.
Bates senior Bryan Frates scored first for Bates in the first minute of the game, an unassisted tally coming off a faceoff won by senior Craig Blake, who was 3-for-4 on the day at the faceoff.
