LEWISTON – Gilbert M. Gagne, 83, of Birch Street, Lewiston, passed away Saturday, March 22, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. “No more pain.”
Gilbert was born March 20, 1925, in St. George De Beauce, Canada, the oldest of five children to Mariette and Rosaire Gagne. He moved to the local area as a young man and was educated in local schools. At the age of 16, he went to work as a lumberjack in the Maine woods with his father.
He was a member of St. Croix Church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus Lisbon Falls Council.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving under General Patton.
He was overseer at Bates Mill for 35 years and also shop supervisor at Sabre Yacht for 15 years.
Gilbert had a lifelong love of the outdoors and sitting by the campfires after an afternoon of cutting branches and trees. He had to be reminded that he wasn’t 80 anymore.
Survivors include his daughters, Joline and her husband, Bruce Tenyeck of Orlando, Fla., Claudette Gagne of Lewiston, and Louise and her husband, Denis LeBrun, of Greene; granddaughter, Denise and husband, Kevin Queen, of Chesnea, S.C.; grandson, Sgt. George Allen Monteith III of the USMC and fiancee, Brenda Parker, of Poland; sisters, Marie Paul Bisson of Lewiston, Marcel and husband, Bob Gallipeau, of Lewiston, Lucette Dubois of Auburn, and Pauline and husband, Roland Drouin, of Orlando Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by the love of his life for 54 years, Georgette (Proulx) Gagne; and his parents, Rosaire and Mariette Gagne.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
