BRUNSWICK – The Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association invites the public to join in the annual celebration of Cuba Week, March 28 to April 5. Since 2003, the BTSCA has been promoting cultural exchange in the arts, education, music history and cultural traditions with the residents of Trinidad, Cuba, in the spirit of respect, friendship and mutual understanding.

This year, BTSCA is especially pleased about the near completion of “Dance of Two Cultures,” an outdoor mural scheduled to be unveiled at 11 Pleasant St. later this spring. During Cuba week, restaurants throughout Brunswick will offer samples of Cuban cuisine, desserts and drinks.

Some of the events currently planned for the week:

Friday, March 28: 8 to 11 p.m., salsa dance with live music from Primo Cubano; salsa dance instruction, 7:30 to 8 p.m., 11 Pleasant St., upstairs in the ballroom. $10 adults, $8 students.

Tuesday, April 1: from 4 to 5 p,m., Brunswick-Trinidad poetry reading with Gary Lawless. Little Dog Coffee Shop, 87 Maine St. Free.

Wednesday, April 2: 7 p.m., a Cuban film “Viva Cuba” will be shown. It’s about two young classmates and best friends, Jorgito & Malu, who find out that Malu’s mother plans to leave Cuba and take Malu with her. The children set off on an adventure across Cuba to find Malu’s father, in hopes he will allow her to stay. Curtis Memorial Library, Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St. Donations accepted.

Saturday, April 5: from 10:30 a.m. to noon, agronomist Wendy Holm will give a lecture titled “Eating Local, Acting Global – Making a difference in Castro’s Cuba.” Holm lives in Canada and brings together Canadian and Cuban farmers and chefs to learn from each other about sustainable agriculture.
