FARMINGTON – The Maine band The Wrecking will perform Thursday night at a free concert that includes representatives of the Teen Challenge center in Winthrop.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. March 27 in Lincoln Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

All are welcome, said Joel Gilbert of Livermore, who along with his sister UMF student Janna Gilbert and their father, Jeffrey, are organizing the concert with support from the Intervarsity Club at UMF and Emmanuel Assembly of God Church in Livermore Falls.

The lead singer of the Westbrook-based band is a UMF graduate so it seemed appropriate to include the group, Gilbert said Monday. This summer, the band will have a nationwide release of its new album titled A New Abolition.

Along with the band, representatives from Teen Challenge will share their stories of learning to leave addictive behaviors, including drug abuse, and obtain job skills to successfully re-enter the community, Gilbert said.

Teen Challenge is one of the oldest, largest and most successful recovery programs of its kind in the world in dealing with life-controlling behaviors, according to its Web site. Established in 1958 by David Wilkerson, Teen Challenge has grown to more than 170 centers in the United States, serving teens and adults in a faith-based program, the Web site says.

“We’re excited to do this for the area,” Gilbert said of the concert, especially for the youth and young adults.
