DIXFIELD – Selectmen honored three now-deceased residents as well as a former businessman when they dedicated their annual report this week and named the town’s “distinguished citizen of the year.”

Citizen of the year is lifelong resident Jon Holmes. He is the former owner of the popular Holmes Market downtown. He has also served as a leader of the Poodunck Snowmobile Club for many years, and in the past worked with the Cub Scouts.

Selectman Norine Clarke said Holmes has always been available to help wherever needed.

He will also be honored by voters at the annual town meeting tentatively scheduled for May 22.

The town’s annual report, which will come out in a few weeks, is dedicated to three longtime past residents.

Oscar Robbins was the town’s fire chief for years, and worked as a custodian/bus driver for SAD 21. Clara Howard, along with her husband Ray, owned a clothing store downtown for years. She was also active in the Advance Club, a women’s group that focused on study topics.

Lorraine Smith, meanwhile, was deeply involved in the Dixfield Historical society to which she left a large collection of historical scrapbooks.

The board has also sent out a call for the town’s eldest resident. The Boston Post Cane has not been presented since 2000. Nominations for the honor, which will include a bouquet and a plaque in lieu of the actual cane that hangs in the town office, must be submitted by April 15.

In other matters earlier this week, the board:

• learned that the town is $23,124 over budget for snow removal and other winter road costs;

• appointed Rebecca Marston to a temporary position on the Finance Committee;

• set a special meeting with the Finance Committee for 6 p.m. Monday, March 31, at which time a finalized budget for presentation to residents is expected to be approved.
