SOUTH PARIS – Dorothy Carolyn Christie, 95, of Gray, retired nurse and homemaker, died on March 27, at Market Square Health Center, after a brief illness.

She was born July 4, 1912, in Milo, the daughter of John and Mae Doble. A graduate of Milo High School and the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, she practiced in Nantucket and Boston, before returning to Maine, where in 1937, she married Donald Melvin Christie, also of Milo. Mr. Christie died in 1998.

They raised their family, a daughter, Dawne Frances Shisler, who died in 1997, and a son, Donald Jr., in Buckfield and Bethel. While her children were young, she did private duty nursing in homes in the Bethel area, as was then the custom, and in 1957, she became a charge nurse at the newly opened Stephens Memorial Hospital, Norway.

After moving to Gray in 1960, she began nearly 12 years’ service as a charge nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston. She retired to devote herself to caring for her daughter and grandchildren.

A member of the Buckfield Literary Club and life member of the Bethel Historical Society, she returned often to visit with friends in those communities, where she and her family had so many happy memories.

Survivors include her son, Donald Jr. of Auburn; a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawne Colburn, and a grandson, Jonathan Michael Shisler, both of Catlett, Va.
