This is in response to the article “State pros to counter drug reps,” March 23.
The article seemed one-sided and misinformed. When drug company representatives call on a provider, they are providing valuable information and samples for patients.
I want to know that my doctor is getting the latest information. Given doctors’ schedules, they don’t often get the chance to read up and study all the new drugs that are coming out. Ironically, some people forget that pharmaceutical companies are for-profit businesses, and that most of their profits go for the research and development of life-saving new drugs.
If the state of Maine wants to save money for its residents who are on MaineCare by using generics, that is great. As a taxpayer, and someone with private insurance, I want my doctor to be on the up and up with the newest medicines.
I don’t want the state to pay for representatives to tout generics and over-the-counter medicines that doctors know are already available.
