LISBON – Elizabeth (Betty) Broman Gavitt, 90, went home to be with her Lord and savior on March 27.

She was born on April 29, 1917, in New London, Conn., the daughter of Arthur Sven and Annie Goos Broman. She attended local schools and graduated from the Williams Memorial Institute in 1935. Upon graduation, she worked at the Connecticut Power Co. in the billing and accounting department.

In June of 1943, she married Stanton W. Gavitt, evangelist and songwriter. He was the composer of many Gospel songs, including “I’m So Happy” and “Things Are Different Now.” Together they spent their lives ministering to others as pastor, pastor’s wife of numerous churches including the assistant pastorate of the First Baptist Church in Portland, and full pastorate of churches in Lubec, Laconia, N.H., and Auburn. Following retirement, they moved to Old Orchard Beach, and did many interim pastorates throughout the state of Maine.

She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Saco. She devoted her life to her husband, family and friends, whom she loved dearly.

She spent much of her time listening and encouraging people in their relationship with Jesus Christ. She spent many years teaching Sunday school and leading Bible studies. She and Stanton often sang duets in various church services. She enjoyed traveling, and spent many winters in Florida with friends.

She is survived by three children, Carolyn B. Gavitt of Gorham, Stanton W. Gavitt Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Portland and Gwendolyn R. Michel and husband, Dan, of Lisbon Falls; she is also survived by four grandchildren, Chris, Elizabeth, Sarah and David; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband in April 1985.
