North Monmouth – J. Wesley “Wes” Robinson Jr., 94, died peacefully at his home on Annabessacook Road, Saturday, March 29, following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1913, in Monmouth, to the late John Wesley and Olive (Moore) Robinson. Wesley grew up in Monmouth attending Monmouth schools and graduating from Monmouth Academy in 1933. Throughout high school and after graduating, he worked on his father’s dairy farm. He also worked as a logger with both horses and oxen. He had other side jobs such as Knowles Lumber Co. and driving a school bus for the town of Monmouth.
On May 9, 1936, in Topsham, he and Edith E. Eastman were married; they had three children, Gordon, Jayne and Judith. His wife, Edith, passed away in 1989. He owned and operated his own farm, J. Wesley Robinson Dairy Farm, for 44 years. His daughter, Jayne Robinson, a retired school teacher from Waterville, moved in with her dad and kept him great company for the last 13 years. He enjoyed the fairs, especially the Monmouth fair, where he was a member and contributor to the pulling ring. He loved to watch his son, Gordon Robinson, compete with his oxen at the Maine fairs. As years passed, he was fortunate to be able to watch both of his grandchildren, Ariel and Maggie McConkey, also pull their cattle.
He loved children and it brought many smiles to his face having them around. He would joke with his granddaughter, Tammy (Robinson) Sawyer, about buying her a horse despite her husband’s interests, he would bring Christmas trees to his grandson, Jay Robinson, and his family’s house for years. He will be sadly missed by all, but he lived a long and happy life. He will be remembered for wearing his green work shirt and pants and that smirk of a smile he had. If one ever had any questions about the town of Monmouth or the people in it, he would be the one to ask.
He is survived by a son, Gordon W. Robinson and his wife, Marlene, of Hiram; a daughter, Jayne Robinson of North Monmouth; grandsons, Jay Robinson and his wife, Brenda, of Limerick and Scott Robinson of Casco; granddaughters, Tammy (Robinson) Sawyer and her husband, David, of Falmouth, Stacy (Robinson) McConkey and her husband, Brett, of Fryeburg and Tina and Bob Curly of Cape Neddick; and seven great-grandchildren, Kayla and Colby Robinson of Limerick, Katie and Zachary Sawyer of Falmouth, Jacob Robinson of Cape Neddick and Ariel and Maggie McConkey of Fryeburg.
He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Edith (Eastman) Robinson; an infant daughter, Judith, in 1946; brothers, Charles Henry and Roscoe Robinson; and a great-grandson, Justin Scott Robinson at the age of 16.
A heartfelt thanks to a special friend and neighbor, Joe Hanson, who was always there to lend a hand whenever needed. The family would like to thank everyone for their help and concern over the past few months. Special thanks to Kurt and Jean from Hospice.
