FARMINGTON – Registrations are being taken for the Farmington Recreation Department Softball Program. Area students in grades four to seven can participate.
A sign-up will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the Bjorn Gymnasium at the Farmington Community Center. Registration deadline for the program is 5 p.m. on April 11.
The Recreation Department allows participants to “play up” in an older division in some programs. Parents who want their third-grader involved in the softball program should contact the department to discuss that possibility.
The entry level softball program is in its seventh season and will take place in May and June with a tentative start of May 5 and ending on June 18. Single elimination playoffs will follow and conclude before the end of the month.
New this season, all games will take place on Mondays only in Farmington. Travel will be limited to Hippach, UMF’s Prescott Field, Mt. Blue Middle School or Mt. Blue High School. Wednesdays will be an opportunity for practice or make-up games.
Last year, 55 players participated on four teams. This season, the number of teams and games will depend on the turnout for registration.
Players need to bring a glove. Other equipment will be provided by the Farmington Recreation Department.
Players will not be allowed to participate on travel or all-star teams until the regular season ends. Seventh-graders who want to participate in the softball program will not be able to pitch or play first base due to league rules. Seventh-graders may be reassigned to a team different from their original one if needed to balance out rosters.
Volunteer coaches appear to be needed for this year’s program. Parents interested in volunteering are asked to contact the Recreation Department. Any adults who would like to be compensated for umpiring games should inquire about the opportunity at the office.
There is a $15 registration fee. Forms are available at the Recreation Department office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 778-3464.
