Throughout schools, the word is spreading about a new website called freerice.com. The website was introduced to students and staff at Philip W. Sugg Middle School by PWS teacher Ms. Katie Coppens. The website is a vocabulary game that donates 20 grains of rice, for every definition you get correct.
The rice is given to any place in the world that’s facing poverty and can’t afford food. The United Nations created this website on October 7, 2007 for two reasons: to help people build an English Vocabulary and to try to help solve the issue of world hunger. Students at Philip W. Sugg Middle School have been keeping track of how much rice has been donated by PWS students by marking down every 10,000 grains. Students are trying to reach 1 million grains of rice.
As of February 25, 2008, Sugg Middle School donated approximately 440,000 grains of rice. More schools should try to make a point of students playing the vocabulary game at freeice.com. It is not just a website for schools, anyone can visit the website. In addition to serving as a vocabulary learning site, it’s also fun and quite addictive, I know from my own experience. So, visit the site and try it. Hunger is really hurting our world, not just in other countries but also in The United States. You can make a difference and help feed the hungry by visiting Freerice.com.
