Recently, I attended a reception at the Turner Center for the Arts for a juried New England Artists Show. Many people were there, and the show was outstanding. I was very impressed with the facility and the professionalism of the folks who run the center. It is my understanding that it is all-volunteer effort by the artists who belong to the center.

What a jewel the town of Turner has in that facility. As a member of Gallery 302 in Bridgton, I am well aware of what such a facility can do for a community. Our gallery has created a much-needed economic stimulus to the cultural aspect of our region. Not only has it brought more artists into the region, but it has spurred more growth in other cultural entities, such as the Rufus Porter Museum. Workshops, lectures, a growing Art-in-the-Park weekend and monthly receptions have brought more attention to our area as a great place to visit and to live because of the cultural opportunities afforded our citizens.

I would not be surprised to see the same thing happen in Turner as interest grows in the center and its programs.

It is my understanding that there are some who would like to revert the building into rental property. What a shame that would be to deprive the community of a much-needed cultural entity.

It is my hope that will not happen.
