MEXICO – A 48-year-old Rumford man is being held in the Oxford County jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail on charges of operating under the influence for the fourth time and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, both felonies, and theft of a snowmobile.
Timothy Gotto of York Street in Rumford was arrested at 1:30 p.m. Saturday near the water tower on ITS 82 at Backkingdom Road after a head-on snowmobile collision with Arthur Bouchard, 56, of Riley Road in Mexico.
Investigating police officer Jason Taylor said Bouchard suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene by Med-Care Ambulance Service. Gotto was also treated by the ambulance service for minor injuries. Bouchard’s wife, Bonita, 56, was traveling behind Bouchard’s 2002 Arctic Cat on a separate snowmobile and was not injured. Arthur Bouchard’s snowmobile, valued at $5,000, was destroyed.
The Polaris Indy 500 driven by Gotto had apparently been taken from the home of Mark Gallant, 47, of Howard Street. It had about $1,500 in damage.
Taylor said the Mexico Fire Department and state game Warden Tony Gray assisted at the scene. Taylor took Gotto to the Oxford County jail.
On Sunday morning, Taylor said he learned that Gallant was wanted on a warrant for unpaid fines. He was arrested and taken to the Oxford County jail where he was released on $790 cash bail, and a payment schedule was worked out for the fines.
Gotto, who has a long list of violations and convictions, is scheduled to appear in Oxford County Superior Court for arraignment on May 6.
