RUMFORD – Rumors that have swirled around town about the arrival of an Olympia Sports store were answered Friday when workers installed signs advertising the arrival of the sporting good retailer.

Jay Wise, owner of the River Valley Crossing Shopping Center, formerly known as Abbott Farm Plaza, did not confirm the arrival of the retailer when contacted Friday morning, but did say an announcement would be forthcoming in about two weeks.

The storefront is adjacent to Marden’s and has been used as storage for the discounter. The new store is expected to open in May.

Town Manager Jim Doar said Olympia Sports’ arrival is good news for the town and for the area.

“We’re excited. Things are looking up for Rumford. I think that will get the ball rolling,” he said Friday afternoon.

Wise was responsible for bringing Marden’s to Rumford about a year ago and has been working to fill the remaining storefronts in what was once the busy shopping center that housed Ames Department Store, among others.

With the addition of Olympia Sports, the shopping center will be about two-thirds full. In addition to Marden’s, the Dollar Store also rents space at the shopping plaza.
