RUMFORD – A 23-year-old man suspected of burglarizing the Greater Rumford Community Center to steal food and use the Internet was arrested this week after a police stakeout.

Adam Means of 242 Pine St. in Rumford remained at the Oxford County Jail on Friday afternoon on three counts of burglary. He is also being held as a fugitive from justice on forgery charges in New Hampshire.

Detective Sgt. Dan Garbarini of the Rumford Police Department said the center had been broken into three times in the two weeks prior to Tuesday night. Each time, a lock on a window was forced, food and soda taken, and exit made through a door.

“It became more of a nuisance than anything,” Garbarini said.

On Tuesday, Garbarini and Sgt. James Bernard took posts inside the building. Around 10:15 p.m., Means allegedly entered through the window. Garbarini said it appeared Means had been in the building before, because he was able to find his way around without a flashlight.

Garbarini said the officers were trying to observe Means’ activities, but arrested him at gunpoint after Means started to approach Bernard.

“He was very cooperative,” Garbarini said. “Very surprised, needless to say.”

Garbarini said Means admitted to the prior burglaries, and estimated that Means had taken about $100 worth of food. Garbarini said Means also admitted to using the computers at the center to access his e-mail and MySpace accounts.

Garbarini said Means used a knife with a 2- to 3-inch blade to open the window. The knife allegedly was found in Means’ pocket.
