The Oct. 30, 1938, radio broadcast of an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” brought national fame to the show’s director, Orson Welles. Playing in the CBS orchestra for the broadcast that night was Mitch Miller of 1960s “Sing Along” fame, who will celebrate his 97th birthday on July 4. Winner: Leslie Reese of Amarillo, Texas.
