NEW LONDON, Conn. – Three different players contributed two goals apiece to lead Bates College to a 9-6 victory over Connecticut College in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Camels (4-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead exactly 11 minutes into regulation. But Bates went on to score the next five goals of the half.

Molly Dilworth converted a relay from Caroline Thomas to put the Bobcats (4-5) up 2-1 with 16:22 to play in the first half. Thomas assisted Dilworth for a second time and Bates carried a 5-1 lead into the break.

Men’s lacrosse

Connecticut 9, Bates 8

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Kevin Nally scored his second goal of the game 1:47 into overtime to lift Connecticut College to a 9-8 win over Bates College in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Craig Blake scored a pair of timely goals for the Bobcats (3-7), tying the game twice in the late stages of the contest and forcing overtime with just 1:19 to play. Senior goalie Will Paddock made 15 saves for Bates, including a huge stop on a blast from Steve Dachille just before the end of regulation.

Bryan Frates and Justin Simon contributed a pair of goals each for Bates.

Baseball

Wheaton 6, USM 5

NORTON, Mass. – Senior Scott Guillerault doubled home two runs in the eighth inning to cap a three-run rally and give Wheaton College a 6-5 victory over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.

The Huskies (11-5) put three runs on the board in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Junior Chris Burleson drove in the first two runs with the first of his two doubles in the game. Burleson later scored on a single by sophomore Collin Henry.

The Lyons (17-4) got two back in the sixth inning on a throwing error and a groundout to cut the margin to 4-3, and etched another three in the eighth to secure the win.

Maine 15, NJIT 3

BANGOR – The University of Maine cruised past the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a 15-3 triumph in baseball action at the Winkin Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders (2-20) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Matt Schlitter had a two-run single. But Maine took a lead that it would not relinquish in the bottom of the sixth.

Curt Smith and Mark Ostrander hit home runs in the five-run sixth inning, and the Black Bears (8-13-1) continued to fan the flames with a seven-run eighth for the commanding victory.

Softball

Tufts sweep Bowdoin

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts University came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the opener 5-3, before getting a complete-game shutout from first-year pitcher Izzie Santone in a 3-0 second-game victory for a doubleheader sweep of Bowdoin in softball action Saturday.

Four consecutive singles in the second inning of Game 1, including a two-run base hit by junior left fielder Kaitee Daley, put the Polar Bears (14-4) put 2-0. Sophomore short stop Shavonne Lord hit a solo home run to lead the third for a 3-0 Bowdoin advantage.

Maine sweeps

VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Maine took a doubleheader sweep over Binghamton with scores of 12-3 and 8-0, as both games were called by the mercy rule in softball action Saturday.

In Game 1, Ashely Waters went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored, while Kristen Clavetti went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The hit parade continued in Game 2 as Alexis Souhlaris, Waters and Calvetti clubbed two hits apeice. Terrren Hall, who was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, joined in the offensive fireworks as she pounded out three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice.
