MALDEN, Mass. (AP) – A handcuffed suspect who didn’t want to go to jail jumped out a courthouse window, seriously injuring a court officer before he was recaptured.

Everett police say 49-year-old George McNelley of Everett in court early Friday afternoon to face charges including assault and battery, larceny and receiving stolen property.

McNelley jumped out a partly open first-floor window, taking a court officer with him onto the ground a few feet below.

State Trooper Robert Noonan, who was in court on other business, ran outside and found the man beating the officer’s head with his handcuffs. He and other officers recaptured McNelley.

Noonan told WFTX-TV that McNelley told him he needed to go home because it was his anniversary.

A state police spokesman said the court officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. McNelley is facing new assault and battery and escape charges.
