NORWAY – Robert L. McAllister, 78, of Ellingwood Road, West Paris, died Friday, April 4, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Known as “Red” or “Bob” to family and friends, he was born in Norway on Feb. 18, 1930, to Guy P. and Minnie Pratt McAllister of North Norway.

On July 18, 1949, he married Catherine Norton in Norway. This year would have been their 59th anniversary. They built a house on the Greenwood Road in North Norway, where they lived for many years before moving to work construction in other New England states. He always returned to their house with his family whenever coming to Maine for vacations and weekends.

He worked for Wilner Wood Products in Norway, and Savin Brothers Construction from 1955 to 1974, traveling between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York until the company closed. He returned to Maine in 1974 to live and work.

He was a member of Union Local 327 of Augusta and worked shutdowns at the Jay Paper Mill. After his retirement, he worked for Richard Kennagh in South Paris.

A favorite pastime was playing solitaire at his desk. He kept track of the number of games he played in a notebook – he said he played thousands of games. He also enjoyed spending time on his computer going through emails that a number of people sent to him, and looking up things to do with his snowmobile and ATV clubs.

He was an avid snowmobiler and four-wheeler, and belonged to Sumner’s Mount Tom Snowmobile Club, Norway Snow Trackers, South Paris’s Hungry Hollow Hustlers, and the Maine Snowmobile Association. He spent many years making and grooming trails that are still in use today. He also was a member of ATV and four-wheeling clubs, including the Black Mountain ATV Club.

Red is survived by his wife, Cay, of West Paris; a son, Steve of North Norway, a daughter, Roberta Bryan and her husband, Sam, of South Paris; two granddaughters, Davina Meader and her partner, Carl, of Saco, Janelle Meader and her partner, George, of South Paris, and the new light of his life, his great-granddaughter, Cloe Catherine Elizabeth Stickney, of South Paris; two sisters, Dorothy Packard of Norway, and Irene Parenteau of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Richard of Norway, and Guy Jr. of South Paris.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Billy; and sisters, Betty Scott and Phyllis Macisso.
