I find it very curious that Cal Thomas cites John Adams in his column April 1 about the price of freedom. Having just completed David McCullough’s extensive biography of Adams, I know that one of his proudest accomplishments was his avoidance of war with France. Adams withstood great pressure from all sides to go to war when it would have been the easy, popular thing to do. To quote John Adams, “Great is the guilt of an unnecessary war.” He didn’t even favor a standing army; he considered the “wooden walls” of a navy sufficient.
Thomas speaks of the need to fight tyranny in the world. Isn’t the invasion of a sovereign country in a pre-emptive war a form of tyranny?
Many people think so.
