NORWAY – Police concluded an investigation into a suspected Cottage Street cocaine trafficking operation Friday with the arrests of four people.

Heath Wayne Edwards, 28, of 42 Cross St. in Waterford; Dennis Michael Garey, 26, of 921 Valley Lane in Waterford; and Cheryl L. Thompson, 42, and David J. Thompson, 44, both of 17 Cottage St. in Norway, were each charged with one count of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Chief Robert Federico of the Norway Police Department said a search of the Thompsons’ apartment revealed 27 grams of cocaine, of which seven grams had been cut for sale. He estimated the cocaine was worth $4,700.

“It was being distributed right out of that apartment building,” Federico said. “We’re sure of that.”

Police also seized 41 bottles of prescription medication, a small quantity of marijuana, approximately $1,200 in cash, nine cell phones, a 950,000-volt stun gun, and drug paraphernalia including scales, pipes, packaging bags, and a spoon with white powder residue.

The charges are aggravated due to the proximity of the apartment to the town’s recreational field on Cottage Street, which is considered a safe zone.

Federico said the arrests conclude an investigation that had been going for four or five months. Police were able to obtain a search warrant after conducting surveillance and undercover purchases at the apartment.

Norway police were assisted in the search by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Oxford Police Department, and a trained dog from Maine State Police. Federico said the four individuals attempted to hide the drug-related materials before their arrests. He said there were three other people in the apartment at the time of the search, who were not involved in the trafficking, including a 2-year-old child.

A pit bull was also present in the apartment, but was secured without incident.

Federico said police still need to determine what drugs are in the seized containers and whether any of them are legally prescribed. He said the focus of the investigation was on cocaine trafficking, but the prescription drugs may have been sold as well.

“It could be literally thousands of dollars worth of prescription pills,” he said.

Federico said he believes Edwards is related to Cheryl Thompson. He said Garey and Edwards were living at the Thompsons’ apartment, although booking sheets at the Oxford County Jail list their addresses as being in Waterford.

The Class A felony is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

All four people remained at the jail Monday afternoon. Edwards is being held on $30,000 bail, Garey and David on $25,000 bail, and Cheryl on $15,000 bail.
