LEWISTON – Job seekers whose prospects were cut short by a bomb threat at last week’s 5th annual Community Job Fair can still explore options.
Information about the nearly 60 businesses and organizations that are hiring is available at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce Web site, www.androscoggincounty.com. Descriptions of jobs and some requirements are posted, as well as contact information about the companies that rimmed Kirk Hall at Central Maine Community College, which hosted the event.
The job fair was canceled Thursday morning after a bomb threat was discovered in a restroom at CMCC. The college has a policy of evacuating the campus in that situation.
Chamber President Chip Morrison said it was particularly disappointing since the fair was on a pace to break records. More than 500 people had already come through between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., when the threat was discovered. The job fair was expected to last until 2 p.m.
“It was annoying,” he said of the interruption. “The place was absolutely jam packed with people looking for work and applicants.”
Morrison said he’s received good feedback from exhibitors about the first few hours of the fair and he expects the chamber will sponsor the event again next year. He’s offered partial refunds to businesses that paid exhibition booth fees, since the event was cut short.
Auburn police are investigating the incident and the school has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of the culprit.
