GRANBY, Mass. (AP) – Was it self-defense or illegal hunting?

A Granby man claims he shot a black bear with a compound bow after the animal charged at him on his property.

But environmental police disagree with David Menard’s version of the story. They say there is no evidence the bear posed a public safety threat and they expect Menard to face several charges, including hunting without a license and hunting out of season.

Police found the wounded bear a short distance from Menard’s home Tuesday and used a shotgun to euthanize the animal, which weighed about 150 pounds and was estimated to be about a year old.
